A rules extension is loaded into memory when Forefront Identity Manager Synchronization Service (FIM Synchronization Service) first uses a synchronization rule that is configured for a rules extension. The rules extension is unloaded from memory under the following conditions:

  • FIM Synchronization Service does not call the rules extension within five minutes of the first call.

  • FIM Synchronization Service does not receive a response from the rules extension within a specified time limit. If FIM Synchronization Service does not receive a response by the time specified by the Unload extension if the duration of a single operation exceeds setting, it returns a synchronization error with the value extension-dll-timeout.

The Unload extension if the duration of a single operation exceeds checkbox and textbox are located in the Global Rules Extension Settings section of the Options dialog that is opened when you select the Tools > Options in Synchronization Service Manager menu.

If the rules extension is unloaded from memory because of one of the previous conditions, the rules extension is loaded into memory the next time that FIM Synchronization Service uses a synchronization rule that is configured for a rules extension. For more information, see "Enable Metaverse Rules Extensions" in the Forefront Identity Manager 2010 documentation on Microsoft TechNet.
