Dial-up connections

Depending on how you configure routing and chaining, Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2006 uses a dial-up entry to dial out to the Internet. You can refine when ISA Server can use a dial-up connection, by specifying which networks can be accessed using a dial-up connection.

ISA Server can be configured to dial out for the following:

In addition, ISA Server dials out to the Internet if a client requests an object and ISA Server cannot definitively determine whether the access policy allows the request, for example, if a Web chaining rule that applies to the request indicates that a dial-up connection should be established. This happens when the access policy rules specify a destination by name, while the client specifies the computer by Internet Protocol (IP) address.

ISA Server checks whether a Web chaining rule that applies to the client request requires establishing a dial-up connection. If such a Web chaining rule exists, ISA Server dials out to the Internet, either to resolve the name of the computer requested by the client or to do a reverse lookup. Then, ISA Server again checks the access policy rules to determine if the request is allowed.

Limiting when ISA Server dials out

You can limit when ISA Server dials out to the Internet by performing one or more of the following:

Closing dial-up connections

After ISA Server dials out to the Internet, the connection is maintained until one of the following occurs:
