keep-alives
A keep-alive message is a type of broadcast message, supported
by both the client and the server, that determines whether an idle
connection is still active. After a network service completes an
initial connection request, it uses keep-alive messages to keep the
idle connection available for subsequent requests. As a
performance-optimizing feature, keep-alive messages avoid the
substantial cost of establishing and terminating connections.
