Before you begin the installation of ISA Server 2006, we recommend that you collect information about your environment. Having this information in advance is useful, because the information is required when completing the installation wizard.

This section describes the information that you should gather before installing or configuring ISA Server 2006.

Networking

You should gather networking information about the ISA Server computer, as described in the following sections.

Update the following table with information about the fully qualified domain name (FQDN).

Note   You can install ISA Server 2006 on computers with a single network adapter. Typically, you will do so when another firewall is located on the edge of the network, connecting your corporate resources to the Internet. In this single network adapter scenario, ISA Server typically functions as a Web proxy server or a cache server, caching content from the Internet, for use by clients on the corporate network. If you install a single network adapter, you only need to update the internal network adapter table, which is shown in the next section.

Update the following table with information about an internal network adapter.

Note the following:

  • If you have a server with more than one network adapter, you will typically enter one default gateway. With ISA Server, the default gateway is usually configured on the external network adapter.

  • If there are additional internal networks that are connected using a router, add required routes to ISA Server prior to beginning the installation.

  • Make sure that routing is properly configured before installing ISA Server 2006.

  • In most cases, Domain Name System (DNS) servers should be configured on the internal network adapter and should point to an internal DNS server. Confirm that name resolution is working properly.

  • Depending on your configuration, you might have to create an access rule to allow DNS queries from the Internal network.
