After extracting SymHelp into a folder in the user's temp
directory, collecting minimal basic information about the system
and checking for the presence of any supported Symantec products,
the Home page appears. This page includes two main sections: a
left-hand product selection list and a right-hand pane containing
scan options and basic system statistics.
The left pane provides the following options and
information:
Installed Products This lists the supported Symantec
products detected on the system as SymHelp initialized.
Select Product This is a list of supported Symantec
products with check boxes allowing the user to indicate which
products are of interest for data collection and reporting.
Products that are installed will be automatically checked.
Close (Expand) Product Selection This bar allows the
user to collapse the left pane when needed to increase the space
available for the contents of the right pane in the SymHelp window.
Clicking the same bar again restores the product selection
pane.
The right hand pane provides the following options and
information:
Quick Scan This window section provides options for scan
types in correspondence with selections made in the product
selection pane. A concise list of results of scans run also appears
in this section.
Selected Product Scan There are four types of scan found
in this sub-section of the Quick Scan section:
Health Check (installed products) A health check scan
for an installed product will produce a series of reports that
attempt to identify known issues.
Best practices (installed products) A best practice scan
for an installed product will produce a series of reports that
check configurations in the product and the system to see if they
comply with best practice guidelines.
Pre-install check (products not installed) A pre-install
check scan for a product not installed will produce a series of
reports that check the system's readiness for installation of the
product including whether that system meets the minimum system
requirements.
Full data collection for support A full data collection
for support scan will prepare the user for contacting support by
collecting the majority of information needed to troubleshoot and
diagnose most product issues.
Scan Status This sub-section of the Quick Scan section
shows the results for Health Check, Best Practices and Pre-install
Check scans in terms of the number of reports that returned each of
the three status types: Error, Warning and Ok. For Best Practice
reports the three status types are Not recommended, Not compliant,
Compliant.
Threat Analysis Tools This window section contains links
to starting tools that can aid in identifying suspicious files that
might not be detected by Anti-Malware technology.
Symantec Power Eraser This threat analysis tool allows
the user to identify and remove suspicious files. The tool performs
a scan of load points and certain directory locations to find
potential malware.
Load Point Analysis This threat analysis tool allows the
user to identify suspicious files and obtain information about what
caused those files to be rated as suspicious. In addition to a scan
of load points and certain directory locations, this tool allows
the user to select directories or files for examination.
System Usage This window section displays a memory
usage, CPU usage and hard drive space usage snapshot as a
percentage of total resources available at the time SymHelp
initialized.
